3 leadership lessons from Howard Schultz, Satya Nadella, and Jeff Bezos

3 leadership lessons from Howard Schultz, Satya Nadella, and Jeff Bezos3 leadership lessons from Howard Schultz, Satya Nadella, and Jeff BezosHow would youdescribe an effective leader? There are many ways to answer that question, but most would agree thattrue leadershipinvolves the ability to practice what one preaches, to set the example, and to inspire others.Over the past few years, Ive studied the leadership styles of numerous successful business leaders while researching my forthcoming book,EQ, Applied The Real World Guide to Emotional Intelligence. One lesson that stood out is the powerful way email is used (yes, email) to quickly communicate vital lessons at the right time.Below, youll find excerpts of three extraordinary emails from the chief executives ofStarbucks, Microsoft andAmazon, and the brilliant lessons we learn from each.Starbuckss Howard Schultz inspires employees after stock market chaosIn August 2015, signs of an economic slowdown in China triggered panic and resul ted in more than $1 trillion being wiped from Asian markets, sending the Dow plunging 588 points in a single day and prompting the trending hashtag GreatFallOfChina.Starbuckss chief executive at the time, Howard Schultz, wanted to make sure Starbucks employees were well aware of the situation - all 190,000 of them. So, hesent a compelling memoencouraging them to show special consideration for consumersur customers are likely to experience an increased level of anxiety and concern. Please recognize this andas you always haveremember that our success is leid an entitlement, but something we need to earn, every day. Lets be very sensitive to the pressures our customers may be feeling, and do everything we can to individually and collectively exceed their expectations. The experience we deliver in our stores, the strength and equity of our brand, and the primary reason for our current and future success is because of all of YOU. I believe in you and have never been prouder to be your p artner.TakeawaysLeadership and culture start at the top.It would have been easy for Schultz to read the news and move on, neglecting the opportunity to have any type of impact on his employees. But Schultz took advantage of a great opportunity to exert positive influence - in this case, inspiring his people to improve their customer service on what would certainly be a depressing day for many.Schultz managed to do this, notlage in a manner that was condescending or demeaning, but rather while dignifying and praising his people at the same time.Microsofts Satya Nadella encourages employees after an epic failAbout a year ago, Microsoft launched a Twitter bot by the name of Tay (officially, Tay.ai), in an attempt to advance artificial intelligence communication. Things went desperately wrong, though, when hackers and others caused Tay to begin spewing racist and profane comments - prompting Microsoft to shut down Tay just a few hours later and apologize. No doubt, the Tay team must ha ve felt extremely down after this debacle. So you can imagine their response when they received anemail from their CEO that included the following statementsKeep pushing, and know that I am with you (The) key is to keep learning and improving.TakeawaysPeople need to know youve got their back.We all make mistakes. The question is, how can you help your people recover from those failures? In an interview, Nadella went on to explain the reasoning behind his encouraging tone. Its so critical for leaders not to freak people out, but to give them air cover to solve the real problem. If people are doing things out of fear, its hard or impossible to actually drive any innovation. When you encourage and build others up, rather than dishearten and tear down, theyll be motivated to continue giving their best.Jeff Bezos uses aNew York Timesexpos to make Amazon betterIn the summer of 2015,The New York Timespublished a scathing pieceportraying Amazon, the worlds largest retailer, as a brutal employ er that puts innovation and company performance above its peoples well-being.Im sure Bezos felt the criticism was unduly biased. (I dont recognize this Amazon, and I very much hope you dont either, Bezos told employees.)Butthrough an internal memo, Amazons chief nevertheless encouraged his people to read theTimespiece, and to escalate to HR any stories they knew of like those reported - even inviting individuals to email him directly. (Interestingly,Amazon later revealed significant changesto the way it would assess employees moving forward.)TakeawaysBezos initial response demonstrated a remarkable ability toset emotions aside and learn from criticism - even if its not delivered in an ideal way.Criticism is never easy to take, but it can help us discover blind spots and find areas for improvement. And even in those cases where negative feedback is completely unfounded, it still provides the opportunity to see things from another perspective - which can lead to invaluable insights. Remember, true leadershipisnt about having a title or trying to impress others. Its about great communication and taking action - telling your people what they need to hear, when they need to hear it, and setting the example for them to follow. This article originally appeared on LinkedIn.

Why the Salton Sea Accident Is the Worst Employee Fail of the Century

Why the Salton Sea Accident Is the Worst Employee Fail of the CenturyWhy the Salton Sea Accident Is the Worst Employee Fail of the CenturyThe Salton Sea welches never meant to exist. But it did.For decades, it served as a gorgeous holiday resort, attracting massive crowds of tourists every year (more than the Yosemite Valley). But all it offers today is a bleak, desolate landscape and its level of toxicity deters anyone to tread anywhere near.So what happened? If youre unfamiliar with the story, heres a quick rundown.New rivers and a new lakeCalifornia is dry as hell. Farmers need a reliable source of water and the conditions werent much different at the beginning of the 20th century. To be able to cope with the hot desert climate of the Imperial Valley, they were looking to tap into the Colorado River to irrigate their crops. To help them out, the California Development Company decided to dredge two intake gorges. But without the use of floodgates. And, as history shows, that was a grave human engineering error.Courtesy of NBCThe canals levees were simply too small to handle flood waters. Whats more, the intakes soon became clogged with silt deposits from the Colorado River and the water stopped flowing. In 1905, heavy rainfall combined with snowmelt broke through the canals headworks. The unstoppable flow of water from the Colorado River gave birth to new rivers now called the New River and Alamo. These rivers took the water into the Salton Sink area. And it took almost two years to create what we now know as the Salton Sea.Nonetheless, the area rose into prominence in the 50s as a new vibrant tourist site and alsosaw a boom in recreational fishing with harbors and vacation homes dotting its sandy beaches. But the heyday couldnt last. Just a few decades later, the golden age of the Salton Sea was inevitably coming to close. The lake was dying - and animals couldnt stand it, either. The ever-increasing salinity and heavy pollution wiped off most fish and bird species , turning the lake into a completely barren wasteland. The environmental catastrophe was starting to take its toll. And if you think this sad story cant get any sadder, get ready to enter the surreal.Courtesy of Still UnfoldWhen nature goes nutsIn 1928, the Salton Sea came in very handy. The Congress was looking for a place to deposit agricultural wastewater and they choose the manmade to become a repository for this runoff - something thats still taking place today.Unfortunately, this decision only sped up the process of turning a popular pleasure hotpot into a merciless death trap. The Salton Sea became 35% saltier than the ocean and even the most salt-loving animal species couldnt spawn any longer. The lake was toxic, with fish dying in large masses because of oxygen starvation caused by overabundant algae. It was no longer a place to live, it was a place to suffer.Courtesy of NBC NewsAir pollution soon became an issue, too. The wind has been kicking up the dust - which contains to xic pesticides - from its increasingly exposed playa and taking it to neighboring human settlements and even farther. And the result?Imperial County is now battling with the highest asthma hospitalization rates in the state. The lakes also been burping up hydrogen sulfide, a gas created by the decaying organic matter trapped beneath the water. The rotting carcasses and decaying algae make the lakes rotten-egg stench unbearable. This smell can travel for quite a bit and its been reported to have reached Los Angeles - which is over a hundred miles awayCourtesy of NBC NewsA mistake of a lakeLike infamous Chernobyl (arguably even worse employee fail of the century), the Salton Sea Accident devastated a vast area of land and maimed lives of its inhabitants.Sure, there are surely hundreds of other such places across the world where ecosystem nightmares have resulted from humankinds rush to come up with short-term solutions to complex problems such as coping with severe drought or taming nu clear energy. To see more examples of when engineering goes wrong, check out Chinas outrageous Three Gorges Dam project displacing over a million people. Or Mexicos wind farms irrevocably changing lives of indigenous people and flooding farmers crops.Engineering mistakes and employee fails will never cease to entertain us. We got used to laughing at other peoples stupidity in amusing Youtube compilations and you had only one job memes. But the infamous time-bomb amid California drought is something different. It teaches us the hard way to measure twice and cut once. To think ahead and do things properly. This speaks to everyone, from waterworks builders to IT engineers and healthcare workers. And while the decisions in our nine-to-five jobs might not impact the lives of whole generations of people, we need to become responsible for our everyday actions - be it work-related or not.Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

4 Reasons Job Postings Dont List Salary, And What to Do

4 Reasons Job Postings Dont List Salary, And What to Do 4 Reasons Job Postings Dont List Salary, And What to Do 6As online job boards have become the preferred method of advertising for open positions today, many job seekers have elendiced a downward trend in the number of job postings without salary and benefits details. Understandably, this can be a source of frustration to those looking for jobs, especially because the application process has become much more involved and time-consuming in recent years. Although the pursuit to have a career that fulfills you emotionally is a noble one, many job seekers have a specific degree, a number of years with progressing experience, or a personal bottom line that requires serious consideration of the salary that an opening offers. A position that clearly posts the associated salary range can save a job seeker a great deal of time and effort. If you have ever found yourself asking why salary isnt always listed on a job posting, we have some a nswers.Four reasons why job postings dont list salary1. Employers today have found its not necessary to list salary. In recent years, the trend has been tonot include salary and benefits information in job listings. During the Great Recession spanning 2007 through 2009, human resource departments became inundated with job applications from professionals seeking work. It was at this time that employers found they no longer had to include salary information to attract high-quality applicants.Even though our economy has reached new highs in the aftermath of the Great Recession, many companies continued this trend, opting to list that the salary depends on experience (DOE) or is commensurate with experience. This means that employer will sift tailor its salary and the extent of its benefits package based on the level of knowledge and experience that a given candidate brings to the table.Perhaps a company is entertaining the notion of filling a role with either a younger employee whos hit ting their career stride, but may require more training, or an achieved professional who has shown they can do the job, but might cost more money up front. While both options could be a strong fit, employers will consider several variables before naming their number.2. Withholding salary gives employers more negotiating power.Employers want to find out as much as possible about a candidate before revealing details about income. In some cases, for example, companies with a remote workforce dont have to pay as much for employees living in rural areas with lower costs of living. Often, candidates from smaller towns are satisfied with a lower income than someone who lives in an expensive metropolitan city, though they may have the same skills. All of this information can play into an employers salary offer. When it comes to remote jobs, location is often a factor in how an employer sets the salary, says briekse Weiler Reynolds, senior career specialist and career coach. That changes thin gs because you may be live hundreds or thousands of miles away from the office, or there may not be an office at all To figure out what salary range you can expect, conduct your salary research using three locations your location, the companys headquarters location, and a country-only search. With these three locations, youll see the broad range of your potential salary.3. Employers want to avoid competition between current and new employees. In a perfect world, all employees doing the same job would make the same amount of money when they started out. Realistically, however, each employee brings individual skills and experiences to a job that makes them more or less valuable in terms of salary. The amount of money an individual is willing to settle for and their location are also factors that influence compensation. If companies posted salary information in job descriptions, current employees could easily view salary information for new hires and that couldfoster competition and unre st within the company.4. Employers want to avoid competition between other companies within the industry. In todays market, companies also dont want to advertise their compensation packages because it makes them more vulnerable to their competition. Competing organizations could use salary information to win over candidates by offering them more money or target high-performing senior staffers within that organization. What to do when salary isnt included in a job posting Three tactics.1. Negotiate your salary. Many job seekers find it awkward tonegotiate salary. They worry about how their request will be perceived and whether theyll be viewed as demanding, greedy, or just not worth it.If youve increased productivity, improved customer satisfaction, saved or earned a company money, or gone above the call of duty in other ways for former employers, be sure to talk about that and show how you can bring the same results to the company in which youre applying.2. Know before you go.Knowing e verything you can about the company and the average pay for the job is crucial. Start with a simple Google search of the companys name and research the companys website. Glassdooris another resource for finding inside information on companies from former and current employees.Glassdoor offers company reviews, salary reports, benefits reviews, and much more to help job seekers learn about prospective employers. Other useful resources for finding out the zentralwert salaries for a given occupation include PayScale and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.3. Get it in writing.Once youve negotiated a fair salary and accepted a position with your new employer, be sure to get your agreed-upon salary and benefits in writing. Doing so will eliminate any possible misinterpretations and offer you a paper trail of the final negotiations.Although its becoming less common to see salary information within a job posting, there are ways to gain a general understanding of what a specific position mig ht pay. Being educated about the companies you apply to, their industry, and the job market is the best way to land a great job at a salary that works well for both you and the company. So even though there are reasons why salary isnt listed on a job posting, candidates can still be prepared to get what they want. Are you currently searching for a new job? helps job seekers find flexible work arrangements ranging from partially remote to fully remote in more than 50 categories. Why and how women must prepare differently for the future

Why and how women must prepare differently for the futureWhy and how women must prepare differently for the futureAs a financial coach, I choose to work specifically with women, because I know that womens financial situations differ from mens. Im passionate about pay inequality, reproductive rights, domestic violence, sexual harassment, and the investment gap. I also know that women think about and use their money differently than men do. But how do all of these things affect womens lives and futures for the long term?I recently spoke with Lisa Margeson, head of retirement client experience and communications atBank of America Merrill Lynch. We talked about the findings in Merrill Lynchs report,Women Financial Wellness Beyond the Bottom Line. Based on the report findings and my conversation with Lisa, Ill tell you why and how women need to plan for their futures differently than men do.Women live longerOn average, women live at least 5 years longer than men do. This means that women will need mora money and mora healthcare. This also means that many women will end up single at the end of their lives, helfende handing themselves. By age 85, women outnumber men two to one and 81 percent of centenarians are women. Two-thirds of women hope to live to be 100 years old, but most of these women are also afraid of running out of money during that time. In addition, the average woman will have 39 percent higher health costs than the average man in retirement, paying an additional $194,000. Thats a lot of money. What can you do about it?Understand the savings vehicles that you have with respect to health saving. If you enroll in a high-deductible insurance plan, take advantage of the HSA (health savings account) that is offered for you. This account affords you triple tax savings because you put yur money in pre-tax, it grows as an investment tax-free, and you can withdraw tax-free for qualifying healthcare expenses. You are eligible for an HSA on your own or through you r employer, as long as you participate in a qualified high-deductible health plan (HDHP).Make sure you and your partner (if you have one) gets permanent life insurance while youre still young and healthy. You should get at least enough to cover a mortgage (if you have one) and anything that you or your partner is responsible for paying for. This will financially protect either of you in the darbietung of death. Ill go into this more below, but you should also start saving early and save as much as you can for retirement throughout your life.Women earn and save lessIm sure youve heard of the wage gap. It means that on average, women earn 20 percent less than men for the same work. That gap gets much worse for women of color, some earning up to 50 percent less than men. And this wage gap doesnt only affect women while they are working, it follows them throughout their lifetime by contributing to the investment gap.Due to earning less, women are saving and investing less as well. This means that they accumulate less in their retirement accounts than men do. By earning less, youre contributing less, your employer is matching less, and youre earning less interest. By the time a woman reaches retirement age, she will have earned over $400,000 less than a man, even if she never stopped working for any reason. What can you do about it?First of all, negotiate your salary Yes, the wage gap is not just the fault of women not negotiating their salary properly. However, negotiating for more moneyisone way to help close that gap, and a great way to make sure that you earn more over the course of your career. So, negotiate for more when youre offered a new job, negotiate for more when youre getting a raise or promotion, and always increase the amount youre putting into retirement when your salary goes up.According to Lisa, womens number one regret around money is not investing more. Start investing for retirement as early as possible, and save as much as you can. It can be con fusing at first, so dont be afraid to talk about money and ask questions about investing. If your employer offers a retirement plan, they are required to provide a financial expert to answer questions about it. Set up a meeting with that expert once a year and make sure that youre investing responsibly based on your retirement timeline. Keep that dialogue going and educate yourself as much as possible. The more confident you are about your financial knowledge, the more likely you are to take positive action.Womens careers are interrupted more oftenThe wage gap cannot be explained away by women taking time off to raise children, even though some people try to use that argument. However, women are still the primary caregiver in American households. Shockingly, women spend 44 percent of their lives out of the workforce for various reasons. Compare that to men, who spend only 28 percent of their adult lives out of the workforce. This can look like taking time off to care for children or taking time off to care for a spouse or parent. This time off means women are losing income and losing time where they would otherwise be contributing money to their retirement. It can absolutely be detrimental to a womans future ability to support herself. What can you do about it?Plan for career interruptions early. Invest as much as possible from the beginning of your career, especially if you plan on having children. Even if you dont plan to have children, you never know if your partner or another loved one will need your care later on. So, save earlier and save more, if you can.Get clear on the financial implications and trade-offs that would come along with taking time off of work to be a caretaker. How will it affect you in the long run? Can you afford to take time off, or should you look into outsourcing that care? Can you decrease the amount of time that youre working, rather than leaving the workforce entirely? Its important to ask yourselves these kinds of questions so tha t you are as prepared as possible. The moral of this report is that womens lives play out differently than mens, and that affects our financial wellness in big ways. We have to be aware of these differences and prepare for them. While we are trying to improve big things like the wage gap and investment gap, we must also take action in our own lives to ensure that we are taken care of.This post was originally published on myWomenForbescolumn.

Job-Search Tips for Recent College Grads

Job-Search Tips for Recent College GradsJob-Search Tips for Recent College GradsJob-Search Tips for Recent College GradsIf youre a recent college grad and havent landed your first entry-level job yet, dont panic.College graduation often comes with a mixed bag of emotions. On one hand, youre incredibly excited to close this chapter and move on to the next in the real world. But on the other hand, you know this major change comes with a lot of uncertainty and with that, anxiety. This is especially true if you find yourself unemployed and still searching for an entry-level job. While some college graduates look forward to one last summer without any real responsibilities, many others feel the pressure to get a job out of college and move out on their own as soon as possible. If you find yourself itching to start your career, heres some good news. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate is currently at its lowest point in a decade, at 4.4 percent. And over 90 percent of employers surveyed by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Job Outlook 2017 Report rate the job market as good or better for the class of 2017.Below are some job-search tips to help you take advantage of this favorable job market to land your first entry-level job after college graduation.Figure out your next moveStart by giving your job goals some serious thought. You dont have to map out your entire career path in fact, I recommend that you use these first few years after college to explore different fields and types of organizations to discover whats best for you before committing to any long-term career goals but you need to narrow down your search to some degree. For instance, is there a particular industry or company that especially interests you? While its unrealistic to assume your first entry-level job after college graduation will be your dream job, its bedrngnis unreasonable to target jobs at companies that are in your dream industry. I f you need a little inspiration, take a look at this list of the hottest entry-level jobs for recent college grads.Related What to Expect From Your First Job out of CollegeCome up with a job-search game planAs French writer, Antoine de Saint-Exupry, once said, A goal without a plan is just a wish. Simply saying I want a job wont help you accomplish your career goals. You need to make a solid plan to keep your job search on track. For instance, once your personal branding materials are in order, make a goal for the number of job applications and networking activities youll complete each week.Click on the following link to download my free job-search action plan to jumpstart your job search and keep your momentum going. Dont be afraid to internIf youre having trouble breaking into your desired field, be willing to pursue an administrative or customer support role, or even an unpaid internship, to get your foot in the door. Many entry-level jobs today require one or more years of relev ant experience. If you didnt intern during college to gain the prerequisite experience, you are at a disadvantage when competing for an entry-level job. Target internships that offer part-time hours or a flexible schedule so you can build up your resume with relevant experience and still have time to take on a part-time job to pay the bills. Its a lot easier to land an entry-level job within your desired industry once youve gained some relevant internship experience and have begun to build a strong professional network in that field. Cut it outHow to stop using weak language at work

Cut it outHow to stop using weak language at workCut it out- How to stop using weak language at workIt is incredibly important to be a good communicator at work. Whether you are working through a project with a large team or navigating a complicated issue at work, communication is key.Heres our question. How do you communicate at work? As women, we can tend (its not an exact science, so dont me) to use language that gives a little wiggle room- to make our coworkers feel mora comfortable or at ease. We can tend to be apologetic, selflessly accommodating, and sometimes self-effacing.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreOf course, there is a line to tow- especially as a woman. If youve listened to Flawless lately or if youre readingWe Should All Be Feminists, you might recall this Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie quote,We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. You can hav e ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful otherwise you will threaten the man.Not sure about you, but this resonated with us here at Career Contessa. When a whole society has taught you to constantly undermine your own power, how do you unlearn all of it?What we can do is take small steps. We can recognize when we use language that undermines our intelligence, our strength, and our wisdom- and replace it with language that is powerful and unwavering.Apologizing too muchThis is one we struggle with- a lot. We recently published an article by Donna Moriarty detailingwhat to do instead of saying sorrywhen an apology is 100 percent unnecessary. The habit of injecting the word sorry into every other sentence you utter might seem harmless on the surface. But it can undermine your authority and your confidence, portray you as weak and indecisive, and even damage your credibility.Sure, there are times when an apology is necessary. However, we need to pay attention to when they are wholly unnecessary so that our true apologies are meaningful. Here are some common unnecessary apologies,Sorry, can you repeat that?Im sorry, but I disagree.I have no available appointments this week. Sorry about that.Im sorry, but I have to let you go.Like most of the weaker language we may use, recognizing its happening is the first step to putting an end to the behavior. Take notenzeichen of times when you apologize for things like asking for clarification, being busy, or simply taking up space- and stop doing it.Does that make sense? or Maybe thats a stupid idea. This is something we hear (and say, ugh *facepalm*) all the time. This is something we tend to say after explaining something complex, high-level, or containing multiple steps. Usually, you have laid out an amazing plan- only to undermine it all by apologetically saying, Or I dunno, does that even make sense?Dont do this Instead of opening a line of discussion, this language createsuncerta inty and doubt. By including this uncertain question at the end of a presentation or pitch, you might also be undermining the intelligence of your captive audience. Instead of using this dubious language, try this How does that sound to you?If something remains unclear, this opens a line of communication- without questioning or belittling yourself. The just of it allJust is a filler word that does more work to undermine you than maybe any other filler word. As part of putting this powerful language idea into play, we all installed the Gmail plugin,Just Not Sorry. This particular plugin will flag language that is overly apologetic or that sabotages your message.Remember getting scolded by your mother when you were really young? Youre eight or nine years old and your mother is reaming you for being late to dinner. Remember what your comeback was? I just- , But, I just- and your mom probably cut youright off. Its because just immediately sounds like an excuse or a defense. When you use just in an email or a meeting, it might seem harmless enough. However, in reality, it immediately sets you behind the ball. Pay attention to this word. When you write an email, give it a read over and remove all justs that dont serve your message. Better yet, installthat Gmail pluginand let it do the work. You might be surprised by how much you use this sneaky little word.Im no expertFirst of all, if someone is asking you a particular question or trusting you with a set of tasks, you are likely the expert. Own it.Too often, we fall victim to that sneaky voice in our head- the one that leads you to believe you are an imposter. Shut that down ASAP. You are an expert. You aretheexpert. Dont retreat into modesty.I feel likeFeelings and emotions are not bad, so we can throw away that narrative right off the bat. However, using the phrase I feel like, before presenting a thought or idea immediately undermines whatever is going to follow.Consider replacing I feel like, with any of these ph rasesI am confident that,My research has shown that,My experience tells me that,Too much yesThere is such a thing as too much yes. While you should say yes to promising new opportunities, You dont want to yes yourself beyond your capabilities. As women, we are capable of taking on a lot without even batting an eye. Spreading ourselves too thinby saying yes to everything can lead to serious burnout. You might be saying yes too much if, at the end of the day, you have worked hard but still have a full to-do list completely untouched. Make sure to prioritize your foremost responsibilities before saying yes to helping someone else. This doesnt necessarily mean you need to replace yes with no every time. This can simply mean taking a moment to audit your responsibilities before saying yes. How to Mention Your Vacation Plans During an Interview

How to Mention Your Vacation Plans During an Interview How to Mention Your Vacation Plans During an Interview Obviously, the easiest way to avoid a situation in which vacation plans interfere with a job prospect is to not plan a vacation while you’re hunting. But life has a way of complicating matters- your sister’s wedding date is out of your control, you put a deposit down on a dream cruise months before even deciding to go on the market, or your spouse already secured time off the first week of August for a long-awaited family excursion to Disney. Will your candidacy be at a disadvantage? “There have been many situations where I’ve extended an offer to a candidate that was the hiring manager’s first choice, and they’ve mentioned they have a vacation coming up,” says Michelle Petrazzuolo, consultant with Petrazzuolo HR. “This is particularly true if we were hiring during peak vacation seasons (summer, the holidays).” Instead of stressing, mention your vacation plans in a thoughtful, professional manner by attending to these issues: Timing Employers use first interviews as a time to get to know candidates and evaluate whether or not they’re worth further pursuit. Thus, experts generally agree that bringing up vacation plans at this stage is unnecessary and might even be viewed as presumptuous. Second interviews convey greater interest, so come in ready to broach the subject. If a hiring manager asks when you’re available to start, treat this as a good opening. For instance, after stating that you’d need to give your current employer two weeks of notice, you might add, “While we’re on the topic of dates, I just want to mention that I already booked my flight to a family reunion in Omaha from July 1 to 7.” The absolute latest point to mention a vacation is when a job offer gets extended. Don’t start working and then dump the scenario on your new manager. Such an action disrupts office life and can come off as uncaring or manipulative. Presenting New employers basically want to know the time frame of your absence, so keep statements simple and to the point. Practice saying your plans with confidence- you needn’t feel guilty about having a life. Remember, you’re not asking for permission, just extending the professional courtesy of advance notice. And definitely tell the truth! Don’t create an elaborate story about needing to go to your brother’s destination wedding in Mexico when you’re actually traveling there for RR with your spouse. Lying to “sound better” fosters stress, especially when a new coworker innocently asks to see pictures of the happy couple. Details Finally, be ready to discuss with the employer how the situation would be handled. While some companies do offer paid time off from day one, more likely scenarios include moving your start date so as not to interrupt the onboarding process, borrowing the vacation days from what you’ll get in the future, or granting unpaid time off. In the end, you’ll likely not need to make a choice between the vacation and the position. But if you really do run up against an employer unwilling to budge, consider it insight as to how much this company actually values work-life balance. Check Out More Job Interviewing Tips

Why You Should Use an Employee Self-Evaluation

Why You Should Use an Employee Self-Evaluation Why You Should Use an Employee Self-Evaluation Want to encourage more participation in performance evaluation and career planning from your employees? The employee self-evaluation is one of the best methods to engage employees in the process of looking at performance and setting both job and career goals. The employee self-evaluation ensures that employees prepare thoughtfully for their performance development planning or appraisal meeting with their manager. It provides a useful opportunity for the employees to seriously consider their level of performance and contribution. This is especially important when you want to encourage your employees to set stretch goals. Self-reflection on the possibilities can enhance their  capability to aim further, higher, and smarter. It is not the same as the manager expecting more from them. It is far superior for performance when it is the employee raising the expectations. Self-Evaluation as a Career Promotion Tool The employee self-evaluation encourages employees to think about and plan for their future with your organization. They can target their next opportunity, possible promotions, different jobs theyd like to try, and cross-training theyd like to obtain. The self-evaluation is also an opportunity for employees to think about their careers either with your company or with another employer. Does your company use a traditional performance  appraisal system? Or, does your company pursue a forward-thinking performance management process? Whatever method your company uses to encourage employee performance development, consider making an employee self-evaluation an integral component in the process. Your employees will appreciate the opportunity for input and your managers will receive further insight into what motivates  and excites the employee. Why Use an Employee Self-Evaluation? In a self-evaluation, an employee responds to a series of questions that help the employee evaluate his or her performance during the evaluation period. This guides the employee through a thought process that allows him or her to focus on the many aspects and nuances of performance. The employee is prompted to think about all of the components of performance, from the job description to goals accomplished and to include professional development in the mix. This structured approach to performance management and planning helps the employee take a look at his current and desired level of contribution. This self-evaluation opens up the conversation between an employee and the manager during the performance evaluation meeting. The act of self-evaluation and the concurrent introspection causes an employee to review goals, assess progress  and thoughtfully consider areas for job and career growth. Purpose of Performance Evaluation The primary purpose of a performance evaluation is to encourage communication about job performance between the manager and his or her reporting staff members. Additionally, the performance evaluation meeting is an ideal time to discuss: The quality and quantity of the work that you accomplished during the evaluation timeframeYour business goals for the quarter or evaluation time periodYour goals for performance enhancement and improvementThe next steps for your personal and business development in your job and career. Recommended Approach to Employee Self-Evaluation Use these  self-evaluation questions to prepare for your performance review and evaluation meeting with your manager. Doing this self-evaluation will ensure that you: Spend time thoughtfully considering and evaluating your job performance since your last performance evaluation or performance development planning meeting,Think about your work, career, and personal development progress since your last performance evaluation,Think about the work, career, and personal development goals you’d like to achieve during this performance evaluation period,Determine areas in which you want to improve your performance- use coworker and manager feedback over the evaluation time period as input, Determine whether there are components of your job that might fit better elsewhere in the organization,Decide if you are spending time on tasks that are preventing you from contributing the outputs that the organization most needs from you,Adjust your job description to better reflect what you are doing,Prepare to solicit your managers opinions about how youre performing and whether he or she needs particular outcomes from you that youre not currently producing, andPrepare for your interaction with your manager to help make the performance evaluation meeting a conversation, not just a passing of judgment by your manager. Use these recommended self-evaluation questions to thoughtfully prepare for the performance development conversation. Following your thoughtful preparation, please send copies of your self-evaluation to your manager and the Human Resources department prior to your performance development and evaluation meeting.

Administrative Assistant Interview Questions and Answers

Administrative Assistant Interview Questions and Answers Administrative Assistant Interview Questions and Answers When youre interviewing for an  administrative assistant job, the interviewer will want to learn about  how  relevant  your  qualifications  are  for the position and how you  would  fit in  with  the company and the department. Because the job requires both administrative and interpersonal skills, hiring managers will often ask about the specific attributes you have that qualify you for the position,  as well as your less quantifiable people skills. Tips for Handling the Interview Its important to be aware the discussion will likely go beyond  soft skills,  such  as  your communication abilities,  organizational  skills, or timeliness. You should be ready to talk about  hard skills, too. 1:14 Watch Now: How to Answer 4 Common Questions For Administrative Jobs Be Prepared to Discuss Software ProgramsSince many administrative assistant positions require frequent use of specific software, you may have to discuss  the  various programs you’ve worked with, how you have used these programs, and your level of expertise. Sample Answer:  I love using technology and learning about new programs. I also have a knack for teaching co-workers who might not be so savvy about using systems. In my last job at Kent Associates, I volunteered to review project management systems for the team of professionals I supported.  My boss approved my recommendation and we brought in a web-based system, Asana, that helps us to track projects and share information on a web platform.Sample Answer:  I am the go-to person in the office for PowerPoint slides and enjoy helping our sales people to wow customers with  their presentations.  I am also an advanced user of Excel and create complex macros to prepare budget projections for project proposals. Be Ready to Discuss Administrative ProcessesYou should be prepared to discuss your workflow and administrative processes in previous positions. As an administrative professional, there should be no  doubt  that you are organized and detail-oriented. Your interviewer will want to know  how  you manifest these qualities in your everyday workflow. Sample Answer:  Organizational abilities and attention to detail are among my strongest assets.  I have thrived in situations where I can bring order to complex projects.  For example, I  previously  supported eight professionals who were planning promotional events for clients.  I developed a template for tracking goals and progress for each project and set it up on a shared drive so that all members of staff  involved  could track  their  progress  regarding  the teams projects and events.Sample Answer:  When working for the Alfred Group, I created a procedures manual that outlined the steps  required  to  process  loan applications, and then uploaded it online so that all the loan officers could follow the same  procedures. Always Respond PositivelyBe mindful of your demeanor  throughout  the interview. Since administrative assistants often interface very closely with the individuals for whom they work, it is essential to be positive, professional, and polite  at  all  times. You’ll want the interviewer to have no doubt that working with you would be a pleasant experience. Sample Answer:  I worked the front desk in our agency, and it was critical that I made a positive first impression for  both  current and prospective clients. I am a natural can do person,  and my reviews have regularly lauded my customer service orientation.  Sample Answer:  The company surveys clients after interactions, and my name consistently  surfaces  as a staffer who  is  helpful, pleasant, and professional. My boss has commented on how often clients ask for me when calling the office for assistance. Preparing for the Interview One of the ways to prepare is to analyze the job description to try to get a sense of  whether there is a particular  skill set  on which the position focuses. For example, is there an emphasis on travel planning, project coordination, day-to-day meeting scheduling, personal assistance, or anything else? If so, be sure to emphasize your most relevant experience when answering  job-specific interview questions. Make a list of the skills mentioned in the job posting, and feel free to add some others that you think would be applicable as well. Then take a look at your own  administrative  and  office  skills, and  match your qualifications to the job. This will help you tailor your answers in the most relevant way to the specific position. A Small Checklist for your Next Résumé

A Small Checklist for your Next Résumé A Small Checklist for your Next Résumé Of course the traditional résumé has been partially replaced by online sources, social networks and other platforms, but the same rules apply to all these forms of media, regardless of all other factors. Listed below are a few key points you should remember when building your present or future résumé: 1. How should we format? There is a general understanding that your résumé should start with your personal details, education, and experience, but nothing is really set in stone. I’ve seen lots of people spending days and even weeks dividing their résumés into columns, adding colors, and pictures. For me, a résumé is a business document that is best kept simple. People who review your résumés will be interested in the details you provide, such as job experience and companies you have worked, for rather than the colors you used. So, keep it to the point and give out only relevant details. 2. Eliminate errors The worst things I’ve seen in résumés are common errors that I personally consider careless mistakes, and with that attitude I don’t think you deserve any further consideration. Case closed. While many jobs may require only your technical expertise, employers and recruiters also look for other qualities in candidates and basic writing and editing skills are at the top-of-the-list. If you don’t have basic skills, you need to acquire those today. As a substitute, you could pay a professional résumé writer to do it for you, but that’s a last resort, not career advice. 3. Be more specific Don’t just generalize about what  youve  done, give precise details in brief. For instance, instead of saying you taught English, say you taught English to French-speaking hospitality management students in Ivory Coast. Make sure you also list your hard and soft skills. Many recruiters and HR professionals will be keen to know about those. 4. Use keywords generously You should understand the needs of your next prospective employer. Make sure your education and experiences are listed up-front. That does not always imply that the recruiter should see it without scrolling, but he or she should certainly not have to rummage through to find this information. So if you’re an engineer who has worked on certain machines that industry-insiders may be interested in, specify the particular machines and anything similar that might catch their eye. 5. Outreach Be sure to post your résumé on as many website as possible. Most employers and recruiters around the world are using the myriad online sources to dig up their next recruit. To be noticed, you must reach out through as many sources as possible while being relentless with the traditional form of sending out your CV via post and email to as many local recruiters as possible. Keeping adding to your accolades and your chances of landing your dream job will inflate significantly.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Would You Hire Yourself

Would You Hire Yourself Would You Hire Yourself? Would You Hire Yourself While many of us think highly of our backgrounds and what we can bring to a potential employer, at the end of the day, would you really hire yourself if the decision was in your hands? To answer that question honestly, it is important for job seekers to take a few moments and reassess what exactly they can offer a potential employer. Among the things to look at include: What sets you apart from the competition and how would you convey that message during an interview? Am I ready to take on this job in the event I am hired or am I just sending out resumes blindly, not really prepared for this job should I get the call? From past job interviews, what can I do better this time around to enhance the chances I get the job I want? The above-mentioned are just three areas to look at as you search for another job while employed or are out of the job market altogether and looking to get back in. Can You Sell Yourself? There is little doubt that being able to sell yourself is key to increasing the odds of obtaining any job, be it a part-time gig or a potential full-time dream job. If you go into the interview process with some nervousness, that is fine; going in with doubts about yourself and your abilities can be the kiss of death. As part of the pre-interview process, look at the following from an employers point of view: What would you be seeking from this candidate? Would the candidates education and work history play equal roles or would one overshadow the other? How much stock would you put in what the candidate does outside their work responsibilities? If a candidate told you they were a couch potato outside of the job, would that lessen your interest in them coming to work for you? Would how a job candidate dresses, talks, etc. be important to you or are results the only thing guiding you in your decision? As part of the post-interview process, look at the following from a candidates point of view: What did you want to accomplish in this interview and were your goals met? If there is one thing you would have liked to be able to do over again from the interview, what would it be? What did you learn from this interview that will influence you on your next one? Was I more substance or more flash? Consider Interviewing a Learning Process Each interview you go on is different from the previous one and will not be the same as the next one. Keep in mind that employers doing the interviewing have different ways about how they conduct such meetings. Some are aggressive and to the point, while others are more laid back. What you want from an interview is the ability to sell yourself, plain and simple. If you go into the interview, make your points on why youre the best candidate for the job and why a company is wise to select you. If youve done that, youve done your job. In the event you dont get the job, you have wasted nothing. Look at each interview as a learning experience, one that will assist you today, tomorrow, the next day and so on. Most importantly, remember, finding a job is a full-time job in and of itself.

4 things you should never utter when your manager is in earshot

4 things you should never utter when your manager is in earshot 4 things you should never utter when your manager is in earshot Some things should really be common sense, but it always pays to have a refresher: There are a bunch of things you should never, ever say when your boss is around. Here are four of those things. That someone else should do something instead of youThis isn’t a good idea.Matt Rosoff, CNBC’s Editorial Director of Digital, with years of team management experience, writes on the site about how he doesn’t like hearing employees say that “somebody should … ”He writes about how people usually say this in an effort to be “helpful,” but this isn’t the case.“They think they’re saying, ‘I’m a strategic and creative thinker who looks beyond the limits of my defined role and thinks of ways to improve the fortunes of the business overall. Please consider my larger value to the company when you think about my performance,’ ” he writes. “But that’s not what their boss hears. Their boss hears, ‘I’d like to add another task to your to-do list.’ ”That you just ha d a wild night on the townKeep this outside of work.Debby Mayne, an author and etiquette writer, writes on The Spruce about why you should never do this.“Never never never go into detail when talking about the wild and crazy weekend you had. On Monday morning walk into the office with a smile, and if the person in the next cubicle asks how your weekend was, say something benign like, “I had a great one. How about you?” Turning the attention to the person asking will let you off the hook,” she writes.A long slew of curse wordsColorful language isn’t a big deal in every workspace, and everyone has rough days at work, but you should always try to keep it professional when your boss is around. So don’t stand out for always being in a bad mood and using filthy language to show how you feel. Your colleagues probably won’t want to work with you anymore. It’s definitely wise to find other ways to express yourself. That you’re not having that much fun at work right nowDaniel B ortz, a freelance writer and Keller Williams Real Estate Salesperson, writes on Monster that you should never say “I’m bored” at work.He features advice from Nicole Wood, CEO and co-founder of career coaching firm Ama La Vida.“Find yourself just sitting at your desk daydreaming? If so, it’s your responsibility to look for ways to fill your spare time. ‘If you just say, ‘I’m bored,’ you’re dumping the problem on your boss’ shoulders,’ Wood says.Your best tactic is to find out if your manager has any tasks that could be passed on to you. Offer to look at your department’s procedures and see where you can introduce efficiencies.”

How to Coach Your Team Technology

How to Coach Your Team Technology How to Coach Your Team Technology There are many keys to effective leadership, but how you coach your team has a dramatic impact on its success. Coaching efforts won’t be successful, however, unless IT managers are strategic in their approach. Managers have two basic coaching opportunities: big-picture (strategic) coaching and day-to-day, tactical coaching. Big-picture coaching might include professional development, improving communication skills or collaboration techniques, and understanding creative problem-solving concepts. This type of coaching is typically more formal and long-term. Tactical coaching refers to short-term, on-the-spot feedback, and it can occur throughout the business day. For example, you could coach a help desk associate who becomes frustrated during a phone call by immediately discussing what happened at the conclusion of the call. These coaching opportunities can be brief, direct and require little planning or formality. The key here is to tackle areas that are critical to success only. You don’t want to create an environment in which team members feel like they can’t make a mistake without having another coaching session. Check out our Salary Calculator for salary ranges on over 75 IT jobs. Create a plan When you coach your team, keep these three things in mind: Make it positive. Let your team members know that coaching is a key element of professional development. It’s designed to help them identify areas for improvement and grow in their careers. Create a roadmap. Work with each employee to create a plan for your work together. Include a timeline, key milestones and the desired outcome of the coaching effort. Show your commitment. Demonstrate that you are committed to the coaching process over the long term. Arrange regular meetings to discuss progress or challenges. Bring in reinforcements While your heart may be in the right place, a manager’s voice can lose its impact over time. In a circumstance like this, bring in someone with a new perspective to supplement your coaching effort. You might ask highly respected peers of the employee to serve as mentors and a sounding board. IT pros may be more likely to see a peer as an unbiased voice, and may have less fear of being judged or reprimanded. Bringing in a peer can also make sense when dealing with someone with highly technical skills who may not feel you “get them” since you don’t fully understand their subject matter expertise. Keep in mind that coaching only works when you have an open-minded recipient. If your employees push back, there might be something bigger at work that is causing anxiety - or even rebellion. This is a good opportunity to schedule some quality time in a private setting to let team members share their perspective and voice their concerns. Look in the mirror Finally, remember that everyone needs a coach. If you sense your coaching is being dismissed, examine your approach and ask a well-respected peer to assess your effectiveness. Issues to consider include: Is your coaching constructive? Do you have coaching priorities, or have you created an environment where you are constantly coaching? Are you providing an example to your team by being receptive to coaching in your own professional development, or do you come across as having “it all figured out”?
